ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

Hello! Welcome to my website, discussing various topics of playing Jazz music from a rhythm section player's perspective.

This website includes:

  • 24 different play along videos, over 6 standards

  • In depth interviews discussing the importance of traditional rhythm section playing

  • Advice on playing Jazz standards

  • Lots of different records to check out

Who is this website aimed towards?

Everyone! However - The first sentence that comes to mind when I think about this site is 'The things I wish I knew before starting college, I would have saved a lot of time if I knew about these things'.

I encourage musicians who are in the early years of discovering Jazz music, or audition/applying to Music colleges to practise and play from the videos provided, and to read the interviews in depth.

ABOUT ME

Joel Waters is a Drummer, Guitarist and Educator originally from Bedfordshire, now living in South East London. He currently studies Jazz at Trinity Laban, and has studied under tutors Dave Wickins, Gene Calderazzo, James Maddren and Asaf Sirkis.

The Joel Waters trio is a new exciting project, featuring Deschanel Gordon on Piano, and Benjamin Crane on Bass. One of the missions of the Joel Waters Trio is to expand the Jazz audience, deriving back to all styles of dance music from bebop and ragtime to RnB and Funk. With the consistent shift of genre, rhythm and harmony, the Joel Waters Trio aims for the audience’s experience to be exciting, insightful and educational.
